You don't always need meds. Try these first:
- Humidifier: Dry air is the enemy. Add moisture to the room.
- Saline Spray: Salt water washes away virus/bacteria and shrinks tissue.
- Steam: Take a hot shower or breathe over hot water.
- Stay Upright: Keep your head elevated to drain sinuses.
Why It Happens (The Causes)
Infection
Cold, Flu, or Sinus Infection. The body sends blood to the nose to fight the virus, causing swelling.
Allergies
Pollen, dust, or pets trigger histamine, which swells nasal passages.
Structure
A deviated septum or nasal polyps can physically block airflow.
When to Use Medicine
- Decongestants (Sudafed): Good for short-term relief (3 days max). Warning: Can raise blood pressure.
- Antihistamines (Zyrtec, Claritin): If allergies are the cause.
- Steroid Sprays (Flonase): Reduces inflammation over time. Safe for daily use.
